New Generation Anti-Depressants and SSRIS
Question: Describech about the New Generation Anti-Depressants And SSRIS. Answer: Introduction Depression is always counted amongst the most powerful psycho-social risk factor for the poor condition of cardiovascular prognosis even after the myocardial infarction (Hemingway Marmot, 1999). In fact, it is the most common phenomenon amongst old-age people causing greater affect on those who live in a community. (McDougall Mathews, 2007). According to a recent meta analysis, (Van Melle et Al, 2004), the depression after myocardial infarction associates particularly with the 2-2.5 fold higher risk of cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality as well as cardiovascular events. Additionally, the depression after myocardial infarction also emerges as a major source for poor life quality (Beck et al, 2001), incomplete recovery (Ladwig et al, 1994), delay in return towards work (Soderman et al, 2003), non-attendance in cardiac rehabilitation (Lane et al, 2001), and non-adherence (Carney et al, 1995). Particularly talking about the United Kingdom, the primary level of care that is rendered to the patients suffering from depression are antidepressant drugs. They were largely prescribed to the patients of all age groups (The NHS Information Centre, 2010). However, according to a distinctive systematic review conducted majorly over the older people, both SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and tricyclic antidepressants showed equivalent outcomes in efficacy, but there were higher chances of discontinuation associated with classical tricyclic antidepressants that may lead to several adverse effects. (Motram, Strobl Wilson, 2006). Looking at such systematic review, NICE (National Institute for Health Clinical Excellence) strongly recommends the practitioners to prescribe antidepressants only after considering their side effects along with the preferences of the patients. However, normally the selection should be made of a generic SSRI for treatment (NICE, National Clinica l Practice Guideline 90, 2009). While considering the patterns of the antidepressant treatment, it was found that SSRIs were amongst the most common class of drug prescriptions. The ten most common prescriptions of antidepressant drugs amongst practitioners may include Citalopram hydrobromide, fluoxetine hydrochloride, amitriptyline, dosulepin hydrochloride, paroxetine hydrochloride, sertraline hydrochloride, venlafaxine hydrochloride, mirtazapine, escitalopram and lofepramine. When tricyclic antidepressants were compared with SSRIs in terms of outcomes such as mortality, attempted suicides, strokes, fractures and epilepsy, it was found that SSRIs were associated with higher rates than tricyclic antidepressants. SSRIs like citalopram, fluoxetine and escitalopram were particularly associated with increased level of risk for hyponatraemia whereas sertraline and paroxetine were out of this risk. (Movig, 2002; Kirby, 2002; Jacob, 2006). However, increased risk rates for adverse reactions of drugs were associated with S ertraline and lofepramine. According to the study of SADHART (Glassman et al, 2002), Sertraline has been found as the safe treatment measure for patients suffering from depression after myocardial infarction. The tricyclic antidepressants are responsible for affecting the cardiac rhythm as well as conduction that can also turn out cardio-toxic for patients. Thus, the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) strongly suggests taking close supervision or extreme precautions while prescribing these drugs to any patient having cardiovascular disease (Oradell, 1998). Although, limited long-term data is available, the researchers have suggested that using SSRIs is comparatively safer than any other antidepressant or tricyclic agent when it particularly comes to patients of cardiovascular diseases (Glassman, 1998). Moreover, while considering the efficacy or safety of these tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs in introductory findings of a meta-analysis on antidepressant trials, no crucial difference was observed. (Goode, 1999). According to this analysis, the major provisions for safety were related to discontinuation of the treatment along with discontinuation resulting out of adverse effects. Particularly talking about UK, the treatment of depression is largely done by making use of antidepressant drugs among which the SSRIs are the most common. In the year 2009, in a community of England, about more than 39 million of antidepressants were prescribed across different ages that come across a 35 percent increase over the past five years (the NHS information centre, 2010). The increase in prescriptions for SSRIs was found about 47 percent whereas for other tricyclic antidepressants, the increase percentage was 18 percent. The major aim for conducting this meta-analysis is to research and examine the possible effects of using new generation anti-depressants and SSRIs on total cholesterol level of the patients over 16, or you can say to examine whether they have any side-effect or not. Resistance of a nichrome wire Essay Example
Resistance of a nichrome wire Paper Introduction In this piece of coursework I aim to find the effects of length on a piece of nichrome wire. Resistance is a force which opposes the flow of an electrical current, this is why energy is needed to push the particles around. The circuit also contains its own resistance if the wires vary in thickness, a thin wire has a high resistance as there is less room for the particles to move and a thick wire has a low resistance because the particles can move around very easily. Its also measured in ohms. George Ohm discovered that the emf (Electro motive force) is directly proportional to the current, this means if you double one you double the other. He called this resistance; the formula for working it out is as follows- Resistance = Volts Current Prediction I predict that as the length increases the resistance will also increase in proportion to the length, my graph should also show that they are proportional this is from my scientific knowledge that says. Nichrome wire conducts electricity very well and because current is the movement of atoms through the wire, if the wires length is doubled so is the number of electrons which will double the resistance. Predicted graph- How am I going to do it? Materials 1. Power pack 2. Rheostat 3. Volt meter 4. Ammeter 5. Nichrome wire 6. Wires 7. Crocodile clips 8. Sellotape The wire was sellotaped to a metre rule with excess at both ends for the crocodile clips to be attached. The rest of the equipment was assembled as shown in the diagram below. I placed a crocodile clip at each measurement and record the resistance three times for an accurate average and then put the averages on a graph. Circuit diagram Results table To make sure of a fair test I am going to do the test 3 times and then plot a mean on a graph. Length Pd(v) Current (I) Resistance(V/A) 3 Length Pd(v) Current (I) Resistance. From all these results a mean was worked out. Length Resistance What do they mean? Without a graph its hard to tell below is a graph of the results Conclusion The graph is a straight line and passes through the origin, this indicates that resistance is directly proportional to length. This means that if the length is doubled then so is the resistance Evaluation From my graph I can see that my results that I collected are very reliable. I know this because my graph does not show any anomalies, this is because the graph is a straight line with no bulges or severe direction changes. There are several changes I could make to ensure better results were gained. When I was measuring the lengths of wire, my measurements might have been inaccurate, as the rulers used might be slightly varied and not exact. It was difficult to get an accurate reading of length by eye, as the wire was not completely straight or flat, these could have caused slight variations in my results. But not affected them too much. Other variables that could be changed are * Temperature of the wire * Diameter of the wire Overall the experiment went well and my results were good, and clearly prove my hypothesis. 1 5 1 Show preview only The above preview is unformatted text This student written piece of work is one of many that can be found in our GCSE Electricity and Magnetism section.

A Study Guide for Act 3 of Hamlet
A Study Guide for Act 3 of 'Hamlet' If youve never read Shakespeare, reading Hamlet, the bards longest play, may be a daunting task, but this breakdown of all the scenes in Act 3 can help. Use this study guide to familiarize yourself with the themes and plot points of this pivotal part of the tragedy. Doing so can help you know what to look for as you read Hamlet in class or on your own at home.à If youve already readà the drama, use the guide to review any developments that you need to better understand or overlooked the first time around. If youre preparing to take a test or write a paper about Hamlet, be mindful of what your teacher has said about the play in class. Highlight any theme or plot development you think you can use to support a thesis statement or expound upon in a persuasive essay. Act 3, Scene 1 Polonius and Claudius arrange to secretly watch a meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia. When they meet, Hamlet denies any affection for her which further confuses Polonius and Claudius. They decide that either Gertrude can get to the root of Hamletââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"madnessâ⬠or he will be sent to England. Act 3, Scene 2 Hamlet directs the actors in a play to depict his fatherââ¬â¢s murder, as he hopes to study Claudiusââ¬â¢ reaction to this. Claudius and Gertrude leave during the performance. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern inform Hamlet that Gertrude wants to speak to him. Act 3, Scene 3 Polonius arranges to secretly listen to the conversation between Hamlet and Gertrude. When alone, Claudius speaks of his conscience and guilt. Hamlet enters from behind and draws his sword to kill Claudius but decides that it would be wrong to kill a man while praying. Act 3, Scene 4 Hamlet is about toà reveal Claudiusââ¬â¢ villainy to Gertrude when he hears someone behind the curtain. Hamlet thinks it is Claudius and thrusts his sword through the arras ââ¬â he has killed Polonius. Hamlet reveals all and speaks to the ghost. Gertrude, who cannot see the apparition, is now convinced of Hamletââ¬â¢s madness. Wrapping Up Now that youve read the guide, review the plot points. What did you learn about the characters? What are Hamlets intentions? Did his plan for Claudius work? What does Gertrude now think of Hamlet? Is she right or wrong to have these views? Why does Hamlets relationship with Ophelia appear to be so complicated? As you answer these questions and inevitably think of your own, jot them down. This will help you remember how the scenes of Act 3 unfolded and help you categorize the information in a way that may make it easier for you to come up with an outline for an essay or similar assignment on Hamlet. Take the same approach with the other acts in the play, and you will have organized the plot developments into a very handy study guide.

War and Violence Throughout History essays
War and Violence Throughout History essays Throughout this course, there were many eras as well as events that were dissected and examined, resulting in great findings of the history of the world. One specific theme that seemed to be recurrent in many events and time periods is that of war and violence. This was seen through the effects of WWI, Adolf Hitler's reign over Germany, and the use of the atomic bomb by the U.S. against Japan. It may be observed then, that change was brought about as a result of war and violence, but in both positive and negative ways. When looking at WWI, it was falsely perceived that this would be a short war, giving the countries involved grief instead of victory by the end. One negative aspect as a result of the war is that there was financial debt throughout Europe due to warfare needs, which in turn, caused them to borrow money. While the countries were wasting away their money, as well as the borrowed money, on firearms and war provisions to prove they were the better country, in the long run, they were putting themselves in financial debt that would take years to pay off. There were some positive outcomes as a result of the war, one being the change in women's roles. During the war, women were forced to come in and take over the roles of the men while they were off fighting. When the war ended and the men returned, women were seen as more equal because it was recognized that they were able to sustain everyday life without the men. This included taking over their jobs, as well as helping out with nursing i n the war, and maintaining the war industry. Finally, one change that was important and resulted from the war had both a positive and negative effect, this being the shift of the West's wealth from Europe to the U.S and Asia. After the war, the countries involved were preoccupied with repairing their countries, so the U.S. and some countries in Asia saw this as an opportunity to benefit their own countries economically. Therefore, as a resu...

The book called Brave New World Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
The book called Brave New World - Essay Example The first chapter tends to introduce the responder to the society portrayed in Brave New World, as the Director tries to make the students familiar with Bokanovskification, an utterly scientific world; it immediately creates the impression that this highly scientific and sophisticated world is utterly oblivious to the natural considerations and the natural world. The hallmark of the society depicted in Brave New World is to give way to a human form that is starkly divested of its inner urges and yearnings and merely acts as an organic receptacle to the generalized social norms and practices. Thereby in Brave New World the intention of Aldous Huxley is to convey that considering the current direction in which the modern society is advancing, it will eventually distort and alter the human nature itself. Brave New World tends to offer a satirical vision of a future that is sans any flavor and happens to be innately sterile. In that context this science fiction novel happens to be anti-u topian or dystopian in its form and intent. The novel unravels a world that is not only starkly stultified by a marked lack of originality, but is also immensely oppressive in terms of the control that the authorities tend to exercise over the common people. Though the novel deals with a futuristic dystopia, yet it has marked links to the modern history in the sense that it resorts to a profuse usage of irony and paradox to bring out the bleak consequences of the scientific and technological development wrought by mankind in the last few decades. The theme of the novel is the impact of scientific development on mankind and the human interaction with nature that eventually gives way to a regimented world where the denizens are homogenized and categorized as five casts that are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon, each cast fixed in its own set ways and incapable of any impromptu and impulsive inclinations and yearnings. This abominable strict social regimentation gets reflected in the feelings of Bernard, ââ¬Å"The mockery made him feel an outsider; and feeling an outsider he behaved like one. â⬠¦ A chromic fear of being slighted made him avoid his equals, made him stand, where his inferiors were concerned, self-consciously on his dignity (Huxley 65).â⬠Brave New World presents a society that essentially accepts the incompatibility between a shallow and drab sense of happiness and the reality that the human beings are required to contend with on a daily basis by legalizing the consumption of a research drug that is ââ¬ËSomaââ¬â¢ that is used by the inhabitants of this futuristic world to escape the drabness and challenges marking the real world. In that sense it is indeed intriguing and disturbing to see that Mustapha Mond, the most intelligent and most accomplished benefactor of the world state regards the drug soma as an immaculate tool to assure social harmony and peace. His thoughts regarding soma become obvious in his conversation with Jo hn where he assures John that the world state will rescue him from the dire consequences of an interaction with reality by giving him doses of soma. The soma is shown to be having the power to induce a pacific state in the people inhabiting the world state at the cost of depriving them of their individuality and innate personality. It is the cherished and legalized panacea in the
